THE ULTIMATE JUMP N' RIDE SAIL BEING AN IDEAL MATCH WITH FREEWAVE AND SMALL FREERIDE BOARDS
Our most successful 5-batten sale to date is back!
Combining the LIGHT DONE RIGHT construction with all other construction concepts developed over the last decade, the DUKE reincarnation sets a new benchmark for wind oriented sails.
The revival of his legendary DUKE was a daunting task that took over a year and a half of intensive development.
At DUOTONE, you as the end user are always the focus of our development. So, especially with the new DUKE, it didn't make sense for the team to rely 'only' on his riders' opinions and feedback. As a starting point, we have defined a bucket list for the new DUKE by involving 'real' end-users who regularly use this type of sail and surf center. And here is the result and how we proceeded:
1. Maximum wind range, especially in changing and/or very gusty conditions
This is the most important factor and the biggest advantage of choosing a 5 batten handling sail. A simple rule is that more battens give you better control and more wind range.
This usually negatively impacts low-end power. More battens make it harder for the wind to inflate the sail, making pumping less efficient. Therefore, we adopted the BATTEN FREE CENTER concept of SUPER_HERO. Instead of the usual even batten distribution, the DUKE has a greater distance between the foot battens and the battens on the boom. This makes it easier for the boom area to bulge out and improves top stability (because of the increased batten density in this area).
A second drawback is that each batten adds weight to the sail. For this reason, wave sails tend to have fewer battens in recent years.
2. It's very light to the touch, but doesn't fall apart after 1-2 seasons of use.
The main reason for the disappearance of the 5-batten sail in the last decade is the lighter weight of the 4-batten sail. Fortunately, we've made some significant design improvements over the past decade. This development resulted in the LIGHT DONE RIGHT CONSTRUCTION, introduced in 2022. By replacing the usual multi-layer reinforcement with a single layer of high-quality fabric and introducing ONE PIECE SLEEVE, we were able to reduce the overall weight by 300g. Most importantly, we are the only brand to achieve these weight savings without reducing the thickness of the film and XPly panels. That's the only way we can continue to guarantee our unparalleled 5-year warranty.
Another problem with reducing foil thickness is that energy is dissipated when the elongation increases, making the sail spongy. This makes the sail feel heavier in the hand. .
In contrast to others, our sails are not only lighter in scale but above all easier to grab water when in use. Because here it really matters!
3. Early planing force without excessive pumping
To achieve maximum planing performance, the DUKE features a high traction distribution combined with a deep profile that helps plan the board.
4. Super neutral in maneuvers
To make tricks and turns as easy as possible, the sail should be completely neutral during maneuvers. Therefore, DUKE has a pressure point further forward. Pulling forward cuts off the power and as soon as you extend or shift the sail it goes into full neutral. This makes maneuvers much more successful.
5. Maximum control of buoyancy when jumping
A higher center of force creates more lift and therefore more airtime. Also, having the center of force forward will help you maintain control at all times.
6. Maximum range of use
One of the DUKE's greatest advantages is its versatility. Great for fun in bump & jump conditions on a freewave board or as a small sail to chase on a freeride board. The front/top draft position is also very suitable for classic tricks and new school freestyle tricks. Last but not least, it's a perfect sail for medium waves and jump conditions, especially in gusty and challenging wind conditions. Therefore the new DUKE is a true all-round high performance contender, ready for any sail. Challenge the handling sail.
7. Easy and quick to assemble
With all the features, markings and tips we have developed over the last 40 years, there is no other sail that sets up faster and more accurately than the DUOTONE sail. This means you don't have to be a pro to rig and trim sails every day to get the same exact trim. Only with the right trim can you get 100% performance out of your sail.
8. Feels like a large freeride/performance sail
Another important factor is that all sails in the quiver should have a similar feel/behavior. This also applies to professionals. It usually takes a whole day to get used to the sail and adjust the style, so it gives a very different feeling. The main reason the sails feel different is the position of the sail draft. Luckily, the DUKE shares a similar draft with most of today's freeride sails, so it's covered here too.
As you can see, we have combined all our know-how and experience to create the most challenging high performance jump and ride sail ever.
Finally, the new DUKE has two optional structures.
Regular DUKE is 50% monofilm construction with XPly reinforcement in all high stress areas (foot, clew, top and luff).
But the DUKE HD is made entirely in XPly, which gives you extra peace of mind. Additionally, this particular sail has a second foil-specific clew eyelet for even more versatility.
